Letter from the Scoutmaster

August 9, 2006

Dear Scouts and Scout Parents:

I hope you have all had a great Summer and you’re getting back into gear for the Fall, school routines and, yes, Scouts. Attached with this letter you will find the following:

• Copy of the proposed calendar for the year.
• Troop Information Guide

These should provide you with most of what you need to know about our plans and guidelines for troop operations in 2006-2007. The boys have a great year planned, with some old stand-by trips like the Gulf Coast and Big South Fork, and some great ideas for some new trips that should be a lot of fun.

Important dates to remember and get on your calendar now:

Tuesday, August 22 - First Troop Meeting from 6:45-8:15 at First Evan registration, dues, announcements, forms, gear, uniforms, lost and found, etc., as well as pizza, games and fun activities for the Scouts. That will include our 6th annual leader versus Scout tug-o-war. At least one parent from each Scout’s family should attend this meeting to complete annual paperwork and get important information you will need to know.

Tuesday, August 29 – Mandatory Philmont Meeting from 7-8 o’clock at First Evan – everyone signed up to go to Philmont needs to attend. We will discuss Philmont preparations. The next payment for Philmont is $300 due on or before September 1st.

September 8-19 - First Campout to Shiloh – our focus will be on advancement, including map & compass, orienteering and first aid. There will be opportunities for Scouts of all ages and skill levels. That will include merit badge requirements for Orienteering, First Aid and Camping merit badges as well as First Class advancement activities that are hard to get on anywhere else. We especially need older, more experienced Scouts to come and show us all how it’s done.

October 20-22 - Scoutbase 2006 – This promises to be even better than prior years. Scoutbase this year will be held at the Battle Arena in Tunica, Mississippi. There should be no weather interference since the activities will be under roof. The program looks great.

Venture Patrol will meets every week, not every other week – at least initially we want the Ventures to meet every week along with the rest of the troop. Some of the Ventures are already talking about how they can contribute to the quality of the troop program while enjoying the benefits and privileges of being older, more experienced Scouts. It will be great to have their leadership and active involvement. We will be planning at least 3-4 high adventure trips this year for this group.

We will be doing our best to keep the website current with news you can use (www.276scouts.org). If you have any questions, concerns or ideas, please feel free to call me anytime at 299-4479 (cell), 747-5560 (work) or 756-5307 (home). My e-mail at work is rmarsh@insouth.com and at home is richardmmarsh@yahoo.com. I monitor both daily, but I keep up with the work address a more closely during the workday.

Yours in Christ and Scouting,
